The only one who ever did that was Alex Haley the aurthor of Roots, his went back to the Mandingo tride in Gambia and even right back to very spot where Kinta Kunta was kidnapped , he went to find a tree stump to make a drum , thanks to his dumb grandma, blame his grandmother for all the generations of hardships the black American went through, and still hasn't come home yet.

      He was stubborn guy and would not give up his name.

      Most took white slave master's names so lost their roots.
