I'm doing my son's genealogy.  He happens to be, of color.  The furthest I've gone back is 1870 in Putnam and Jones Co. Georgia; although some of his folks have birthdates in the 1830's.  It's tough, but I am fascinated by the research.  One day, I suspect I'll root back into Africa.

In general, everyone originated from the same place, Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia is located between the Tigris and Euphrates River which is located in modern day Iraq.

For the african americans that descended from people kidnapped and brought to the U.S. as slaves, it is a little difficult to say.  One must take a DNA test, but it would only give mild insight into the ancestry.  Africans lived in tribal societies.  They rarely married outside of their tribes, which is still very common today.  African Americans intermarried with each other, which created a diverse blend of tribes.
