  1. Indian elephants and rhinos are not the same species as those in Africa. But the original range of the Nile crocodile extended from NE Africa (Egypt) to the Yarkon river in Palestine, part of Asia. The range of gazelle still extends into the Mideast.

  2. African elephants and Asian elephants are different species, and the rhinos found in Africa (black and white rhinos) are different species to those found in Asia (Sumatran, Javan and Indian rhinos). However, Asiatic lions are NOT a different species to those found in Africa, they are simply a different subspecies - for example, the lions found in the Masai Mara are Masai lions, Panthera leo massaicus. Asiatic lions are Panthera leo persica. Both are Panthera leo - the same species. The same is true of the small, relict population of cheetahs in Iran - different subspecies to their African counterparts, but same species. Note that there are only about 30 of these animals left, leaving them with a very small gene pool, and they may become extinct in the wild before long.

Somebody mentioned gazelles - there are numerous species of gazelle, but none are found in both Africa and Asia. There are crocodiles on both continents, but again these are different species.

Brown hyenas, like spotted hyenas, are exclusively African, but striped hyenas are also found in Asia. Leopards, honey badgers (also called ratels) and golden jackals are found in both Africa and Asia.

  3. All those you've just mentioned are different species to the ones in Africa.

    Bush/Savannah Elephant - Indian Elephant

    Black/White Rhino - Sumatran/Javan/Indian Rhino

    African Lion - Asiatic Lion

    Savannah Cheetah - Asiatic./Iranian Cheetah

  4. The animals we think of as typically African used to have much wider ranges, as far north as England, for example. Google "Dogger Banks fauna", if you are interested.
