African fantasy or fiction?

Are there any African based fantasy or fiction novels/short stories/etc? Like Lord of the Rings-type? Thanks!

Its hard to find African descent fictional writes such as sci fi and horror.  One of my favorite writers is African-American who was one of the first of her kind in Sci-fi.  Octavia Butler ...If you choose to buy her books, pay attention to the link I gave you because there are the original releases of her series by book series(buy books separately), as well as one large compilation book for each series(whole series brought together in one binding).

The Fledgling is the first book I read which unfortunatley was her last book due to her death...but it got me hooked, and I have completed the book Liliths Brood (formerly Xenogenesis trilogy) and the Patternist Series

Also other great witers in Scifi and horror are Tananarrive Due(love her!), Brandon Massey, and LA Banks(not really impressed)

Steve Barnes'  Lion's Blood was pretty good.  Alternate world sci-fi ruled by islamic and zulu civilizations.

The stock nature of a lot of fantasy works lead the authors to use a generic medieval setting, which occasionally includes pseudo mid-eastern, Indian, or Chinese settings.  I can't think of one that uses sub-Saharan Africa as a basis, but that could be because it'd be indistinguishable from any primitive culture.  

In sci-fi you have plenty of black heroes and any number of "evil empires" (is there any other kind?) that are African based.
