Hey I just wanna know, my newly fledge african grey recently crashed into da window. He seems fine, eating well, still recognizes me, and still flaps though I got his wings clipped after the incident. Should I be more worried than I already am?

  1. He is probably ok.  If he has any seizures or gets droopy wings, take him to the vet right away.  Keep his wings clipped at all times.  Many birds die of broken necks from flying into things.  Please read my profile.

  2. Hello,

no not at all dont be worried . African greys dont have the best sight he probally didn't know the window was there its quite commen if he dosen't try and fly in the next 3 days it probbaly wise just to check him out with the vets it might because he has injured himself or he is nervous that this might happen again (even though you said that he is flapping) To provent this happening again it is best to put a colourful blind over the window so he can see it clearly .You have deffiently done the right thing by clipping his wings  Clipping a bird's wings is done mainly for their own safety. Birds can fly into windows, doors, ceiling fans, hot cooking foods and any number of places in the home where they can injure themselves. I hope this helps.

  3. Your bird will be fine...Most baby Grey's can not get enough speed indoors to do any damage.

This is a big controversy with many bird lovers. To clip or not to clip. Grey's are extremely intelligent and their eye sight is fine. They will run into things and fall down, that is a part of growing up. You did not start walking the first time you tried. Show him where the windows are, let him touch the windows and play with him around them. He will remember where they are and that they are solid, do the same thing with your mirrors. We keep Grey's, Macaws and Amazons flighted in our house without any problems. They have almost full run of our house.. All of our birds have learned about windows within 72 hours and Grey's even less time then that.

The biggest problem with flighted birds is flying away.... You need to do some simple "Recall Training"  and with Grey's this is easy as well..

The down side to clipping. When scared a bird has only two things it can do... Fly away or Bite. With a clipped bird it can not fly away, So you have increased it's likely hood of it become a biter. It will learn how to bite very quickly

  4. No I would just go easy on him for a while dont let him or her out to much but let him or her out sometimes, they tend to be quiet after and incident like that, but I would have him or her checked to make sure. hope this helps :]
