  1. If your bird cut the skin over her keel, she needs to have it looked at - by you - to be sure it is not infected.  Her wings are too severely cut if she hurts herself.

Furthermore, she has not been socialized and only you can do this for her.  Get her out of the cage every day - with the Step UP command.

Expose her gently to all in her environment, telling her ' You're Okay' every moment.  You do not want a scaredy bird on your hands.

Google - Nurturing Dominance and read all Sally Blanchard has to say.

Get her book - The Parrot Handbook and read every word.  You have a wonderful creature here and you need to mold her to be the best she can be.

  2. Regarding a list of foods that she can eat - she can eat just about everything you can eat, but you MUST keep her away from avocado, apple seeds, any fruit pits, tobacco, nicotine, and chocolate. Those foods are toxic to birdies.

Try google to see a more comprehensive list, but parrots usually love nuts (in moderation), strawberries, peaches, papaya, (again, fruit in moderation), and they'll eat rices, pastas (go with whole wheat), etc.

  3. She does this probably because she doesn't like it, isn't used to it or is afraid of it. Mine used to do that, Greys can have big attitudes. Every time she screams tell her "NO" and if she does it again put her on "timeout" (in a cage or cat carrier) for  5 minutes. After a while, that worked with mine.

You can get suction cup perches that can stick to windows and showers.

Your grey can eat many of the things you do, excluding chocolate, caffeine, milk, avocado, carbonated drinks and alcohol. Carrots, and dark greens are really good for her.

  4. African Greys are like that.  You have to introduce things slowly ex: set the item on the floor 20' away then keep moving it closer daily.

As for food I hold it near her and pretend I'm eating it and I'm saying this is sooooooooo good.  I turn it over and over in my hand.

  5. These are apparently things that your bird is not used to, things that are not inside her cage.  Many birds are like this, my grey included, in fact all of my birds do this.  Strange or new things freak them out.  They don't know what they are and are genuinely afraid of them.  Be careful when carrying new things around your birds cage.  If you try give her a new toy, introduce it slowly.  Hang it some where close to her, or lay it on a table close to her cage. Your bird is a little worse than most are.  As far as new foods, just put a few pieces of what ever it is, in her food dish with the rest of her food.  Only a very few small pieces.  Gradually give her larger pieces over time, and finally, just put them in a different dish all together.  I have dealt with birds that have these fears that are just as bad as your bird.  The biggest thing is to try not to freak her out.  This causes stress, and stress can lead to feather picking and other bad habits.  Take your time when giving your bird anything new, and also be careful when you take anything new around her that is for household use, or personal things, such as jewelry.  With birds like this, everything can cause a stressful situation.  Your bird will get better with time, just be patient with her.  You will have to slowly introduce her to new people and new things, and this will take time.

If the bird is new to your home, she will have to be given time to acclimate herself to new people and surroundings. I would have a vet check her for internal injury from her accident.

You can buy a perch made for birds that like to look out the windows.  It has strong suction cups that stick to the window.  The come in many sizes, and many pet stores have them.  If you can't find one at the pet store visit Drs Foster and Smith. com.  They sell all kinds of things for birds.

Your bird can eat all kinds of things.  A pelleted diet is best for her, it contains all the nutrition she will need without having to give her vitamin supplements.  She can also eat most of the things that you eat, as long as they don't contain added salt or sugar.  Things she should not have are, chocolate, avocado, caffeine, carbonation, apple seeds, peach seeds, or alcohol.  Share your food with your bird at meals.  In a flock, eating is a social thing, so it is going to be very natural for your bird to want to eat when you do.  Just give small tastes of things.  They also like spicey foods sometimes.  My birds love hot wings.  But only give a small amount because there is sugar in the sauce.  Cooked pastas are also a favorite, with or without sauce.  Just remember to think about how much sugar or salt is in the food you are giving her.  Fruits and veggies will sometimes make the droppings a bit watery, but this is because they contain more water than other foods.
