  1. it all depends on how it was raised and trained, they both make good pets. grays talk and mimic more, and cockatoos love to be with their owners. but none of them are quiet. the r both sometimes VERY loud

  2. There is good and bad in both birds, depends on what your looking for in a pet bird, Grey's are less needy but can be nippy even IF they are hand fed, the Congo's tend to be more standoffish then the Timneh Grey's, but they are NOT the cuddly type, now Cockatoos come in different sizes, the bigger ones can be loud and very needy, the smaller ones tend to be more laid back but you run the risk of feather plucking, screaming and so on, its a life long commitment with both and you have to have the right size cage, diet, toys, time out of the cage and so on. My best advice is if this is your first bird look at something smaller, both tend to be loud, most all parrots are loud, as far as friendly depends on how you handle them.. Go visit a rescue they can explain the good and bad of both and other parrots as well.

  3. Cockatoos are the number one bird species found in rescues unfortunately and obviously there is a huge reason for this being a fact. They start off cuddly and end up as mature adults very high maintenance very loud very needy and many times with destructive behavior beyond belief! Grey's are not an easy bird by any means but out of the two these are definitely quieter and in the end with proper care from you right from the very beginning will be a much better pet. Don't go cheap on a bird like this, find an excellent breeder with referrals that you can get support before during and after the purchase of your bird. I also recommend that you visit the baby regularly during the hand feeding process.

  4. african greys there realy nice, realy smart, and can learn lots of things if your willing to teach em' here watch this african grey.http://youtube.com/watch?v=tsu3bxuxoFY

  5. it depends on what you like better, a talking bird (african grey) or a dancing bird (cockatoo). If you want a cockatoo i would get a sulfur crested.

  6. The key is that the bird was hand raised and hand fed.

African Greys are the best bird - IMHO.  Cockatoos are much noiser and often more needy.

  7. It is a personal preference.  Both can be very noisy.  A cockatoo needs more one on one attention, though, where an African Grey does not and will do better if you are not home alot.  Cockatoos can be screamers, but Greys, once they start to talk, can be continous talkers, only stopping once in awhile.  I have one of each, and would not give up either one.  Just make sure you get one that has been handled a lot as a baby.  Being hand fed does not mean the bird was handled except at feeding.  You want a bird that the breeder has handled other than feeding, you will know it when you see it.  Just for your info....ALL birds should have 9 hours of undisturbed sleep each night, in a quiet, darkened room, with his cage covered.  This is NOT just for African Greys, it is for all birds.   Please read my profile.

  8. Wow, friendly & quiet is asking alot from a companion parrot!!

You should have a follow up question for the negatives of both breeds...there are many!

    Friendlier:    Cockatoo group.

On the average, they will step to more people.  Known for thier "snuggly" qualities.

    Quieter:    Grey group.

They do not "scream" like the 'toos.  They are very vocal, but tend to imitate common noise and speech rather then scream.

    Better Pet:    Purely subjective.

All depends on your lifestyle and what you value in a companion bird.  There are alot more "sad stories" envolving cockatoos then any other species of companion parrot.  Its for this reason that statistically...greys make better pets.  But try telling that to my Lesser Sulfer Crested Too, "sweat-pea"...he totally lives up to his name.

**A warning about these 2 birds.  Both birds pose human health hazard.  They can cause and or exagerrate asthma and COPD.  Its unfortunate for the human and the bird who have to part ways after many years, for this reason.

If you have any respiratory issues and must have a bird....then choose another..i.e. Eclectus, Conure, Macaw, Amazon.

  9. there both awesome birds cockatoos are sorta noisy and African grays must have 10 hours of pure silence sleep which is difficult to get go to Google and type in  both bird breeds and sites about then will pop up and as well look at other breeds like severe macaws or parrots  and go to birdbreeders.com and you can find breeders for whatever breed you want as well hand feed dont bite as much chose carefully because once you get them you stuck with them for like 80 years i getting a severe macaw and i cant wait to get it choose carefully and you'll  love your bird
