Afridi calls for review system to be introduced in ODI’s
Pakistan ODI captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Afridi-c2482 has categorically demanded for the introduction of the system to review the decision of the umpires in one day matches, since he feels that one wrong decision could affect the result of the entire match. It is imperative
to note, that the introduction of the Umpire Decision Review system by the International Cricket Council in Tests has been very succusful particularly during the test series between Pakistan and England where it gave lifelines to a number of players who were
given out due to an error of judgement by the umpire.
The teams are allowed to challenge the decision of the on field umpire and the decision is then referred to the television umpire who replays the incident to see if the decision was right or not from many different angles. Umpiring has been particularly
poor in the ODI series between Pakistan and England where many people including the English fans felt that a lot of decisions were made against Pakistan.
One fan stated, “ACSU should at least speak to the umpire on what was he thinking? As an Englishman I felt ashamed as all the umpiring errors were against Pakistan throughout this series, Strauss was plumb LBW yesterday but not given so is ICC doing anything
about it?”
The teams have a couple of opportunities per innings to contest an on the field decision however the most contentious issue is that the hosts of the match have to pay for the technology costs something which is unacceptable to many countries. "I think the
referral system is a must in one-day matches," Afridi said.
During http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755’s 257 run chase against England in the final, Kamran Akmal was given out in a very controversial decision where the replays showed that the batsman had edged the ball on to his pads, a thick inside edge.
"One decision can change the whole match, some leg-befores... and I am not talking of this match only, also in previous matches, and if such things (wrong umpiring decisions) happen then it changes the whole match," Afridi went on to note.
The England Andrew Strauss was given not out by umpire Billy Doctrove when he was on 38, and the replays showed that it should have been given out. Strauss went on to make 126 runs and defeated Pakistan by 4 wickets and 3 balls to spare.
