Afrodite Kyranakou and Jeske Kisters of Netherland retain lead at 2012 470 Junior Worlds
After sailing impressively between Waitemata waters and Rangitoto Island, the Dutch pair of Afrodite Kyranakou and Jeske Kisters managed to retain their overall lead of 470 Women class of 2012 470 Junior Worlds at Waitemata. The event is being hosted by
Takapuna Boating Club in Auckland, New Zealand and is featuring outstanding competitions in perfect summer conditions.
The weather conditions at the start of the third day were a bit cloudy with a south westerly cool breeze blowing up to six knots that dominated the race course. However, there was enough wind to commence the Day 3 proceedings properly. The fleet started
the overall fifth race on time until the expected north easterly sea breeze filled in and the sailors had to come up with a different strategy to sail accordingly.
Great Britain’s Anna Burnet and Flora Stewart were able to sail ahead of the fleet to claim the top spot in the fifth race, while the Dutch duo managed to claim the second spot finish followed by Sasha Ryan and Jamie Ryan on third podium place finish.
The winds built up a bit at the beginning of the sixth race and started gusting over the racing area from 10 to 15 knots with the instantly building waves. This forecast troubled most of the sailors and dragged them into the wrong settings. However, the
470 Women fleet completed the race with the Dutch pair finishing first on the podium.
Kyranakou and Kisters, with a second and a first podium place managed to maintain their overall lead with seven points overall after six races, including a discard. The British pair of Anna Burnet and Flora Stewart moved into second position overall with
11 points, while Germany’s Annika Bochmann and Elisabeth Panuschka were able to claim third podium position after securing 12 points.
