Question:

After 1 yr lease and moving, do I have to repaint (4 unusual colors?!!)?

When we moved into a rental house 1 yr ago it had just been repainted four very unique colors - buttercream yellow, taupe green, eggshell, etc. ... very hard colors to buy b/c they have to be specially mixed.

Well, some of the paint cans were in the garage so after patching nail holes, etc. I went to use these paints, but some didn't match or were too old and gross to use, etc.

Should I be responsible for repainting even though I should think a landlord would require each tenant to repaint with neutral colors before moving out (and the previous tenants didn't!)?

I live in CA.

Thanks!!

  1. depends on the contract. if nothing is stated i would think that the landlord would be responsible to paint and clean up after the old tenants and make way for the new.

  2. You are responsible for any damage you inflict upon the unit except for normal wear and tear. The nail holes are your responsibility to repair and paint to match. Sorry, but unless you had an agreement with the owner upon move in you are responsible to either paint or match what is on the walls. If the paint codes are still readable you should be able to purchase an exact match and touch up. Hope this helps.
