  1. You should probably be more specific with what state you are in, or what state you are willing to go to.

First of all, obviously, tertiary education is a must have. The quickest route is straight into university, I can only speak for uni's in NSW but you should really consult the UAC guide to see what universities offer an aeronautics degree, you should be able to get this free. University of Sydney and University of NSW are probably your best bet as they have specific aeronautic/aerospace curriculum's,  though they are also the most competitive to get into. You can probably choose either course, to help your chances as they will run almost the same subjects for the first 2-3 years.

Short of this (ie. if you don't get the grades) I would suggest applying for a bachelor in mechanical engineering, this actually shares quite a number of topics and subjects as aeronautics. Once in this you can do one of two options, 1) Work real hard your 1st and 2nd year get good marks and ask to transfer your course, if this doesn't work choose electives in aeronautical areas such as aerodynamics fluid dynamics etc. The second option gives you a lot better chance of getting a place as more universities offer a mechanical eng. course.

Another option if you are really worried about how your results are going to turn out is starting with an advanced diploma in mechanical engineering at TAFE. Once completed you have a much greater chance of gaining a place at uni and offers some good technical and hands-on experience

Most importantly ask lots of people, teachers, careers advisers, university lecturers etc. for as much information as you can get.
