  1. Its due to poor maintenance. Not enough attention is paid to aircraft maintenance in this country. These guys and girls are just as important as the pilots yet get paid a fraction of the money. As the old saying goes you get what you pay for. They should be better educated and better paid. I cannot think of a more important job. One mistake can kill hundreds of people. Flight 800, Alaska, Value Jet the list goes on and on all maintenance errors yet we continue to ignore the importance of these people and the responsibilities they have.

  2. I think several of the new ones will eventually because they are  cutting cost due to gas, oil and employee benifits. That they cut back on maintainance.  Maintainance cost alot, and requires labor and supervision, plus cost of overtime and parts or supplies if needed. Therefore they cut back. Which eventually can or will lead into machanaical problems, unsafe aircraft, and putting general public and crew members  in danger and at risk.

  3. evry 1

  4. Any airline that fly's the MD-80 currently will be affected, its a recall on the wiring systems in the MD-80 that need to be check out and fixed. The reason that American Airlines is taking the biggest hit because they have the most MD-80's in there fleet with over 300+ of them.... Delta had approximately 117 checked. American has double that so its going to take time to check and fix all of them

  5. any and all airlines that operate MD80's will be affected

  6. Delta is a huge operator of MD-80s (the plane that is grounded) but I think it has more to do with American Airline's maintenance practices than a chronic problem with the plane.

  7. American didn't do their maintenance checks properly...

Probably because they do their maintenance in third world countries where labor is cheap.....

  8. It is not based on the aircraft make or models.  It is based on did the airline comply with the required Airworthiness Directive (AD) and required maintenance procedures or not.  The airlines you see in the news has been cutting corners to safe money on required maintenance that make aircraft “Airworthy”

AIRWORTHY--- Two conditions that must be met for and aircraft is considered airworthy.

    1. The aircraft must conform to its type certificate.  Conformity to type design when the aircraft  configuration and the components installed are consistent with the drawings, specifications, and other data i.e. STC field approved alterations.

    2. The aircraft must be in condition for safe operation.  Condition of the aircraft relative to wear and deterioration, i.e. skin corrosion, window delamination/crazing, fluid leaks, tire wear, etc.

NOTE:  If one or both of these conditions are not met, the aircraft would be considered unairworthy.

The airlines did not comply with part 2 must be in a condition for safe operations.  The aircraft had unsafe thing with them and the airlines chose not to comply to save money at the passenger’s safety.

All aircraft have Airworthiness Directives (ADs) that have to be complied with.  Both the MD-80 and B-737 had ADs that were not complied with.  All aircraft required inspection programs that required certain maintenance at certain times, which is required.  The Code of Federal Regulation Title 49 Part 43 Section 43.13 requires mechanic to follow the most current maintenance manuals and have calibrated special tools.  Some airlines have chose not to follow this rule and as a result had to ground some of their fleets to re-accomplish the required maintenance.  Aircraft were unairworthy part 2 not in a condition for safe flight.

Sorry but that is the bottom-line "money".  As the old saying goes follow the money.
