After Delmon Young, Detroit Tigers lose Magglio Ordonez – MLB Update
After losing out on Delmon Young prior to the American League Championship Series against Texas Rangers, the Detroit Tigers suffered another gust when out-fielder and star slugger Magglio Ordonez re-fractured his right ankle and walked out of the rain-interrupted
Game 1 of the series on Saturday, October 8 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas.
A dejected Jim Leyland announced that the Tigers have lost their second starting out-fielder in as many days to add to the misery of the team. Justin Verlander lost his start against the Rangers and their bull-pen is not picking up momentum. With weather
having the final say in their affairs during the post-season, chances of them going through to the World Series remain to be on the lower side.
Ordonez underwent surgery in July 2010 on his ankle and had since recovered remarkably. However, this problem reaggravated in the regular season, forcing him to sit out for a month and has now effectively ended his season.
Leyland expressed that Ordonez had been talking about his fitness and how well he has recovered since the surgery last year. However, the star slugger walked to load bases in Game 1 of the ALCS and then was replaced by a pinch runner during the rain interval.
"When the trainer came in during the rain delay and told me, I was almost flabbergasted, to be honest with you," Leyland said. "It doesn't appear that there was any significant movement or anything that did it. It just all of a sudden it flared up."
Briefly explaining Ordonez’s situation, Leyland stated that the player will not be available for the rest of the year, at least.
After having produced his career-worst performance in the regular season, Ordonez was 5-for-13 in the post-season and was looking strong to stage a resilient fight against the strong Rangers’ bull-pen. However, with both Young and Ordonez now out of their
ranks, their line-up does not have much to offer.
During the regular season, Ordonez played 92 games and managed to drive in just 32 runs and five home-runs at an average of .255.
There has been no announcement as yet on who will replace Ordonez on the roster.
