Ali was the boxing master. Fighters like Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano were vicious brawlers. Evander at his best had great outside footwork and boxing ability and also could change up and be a terrifying brawler with a TITANIC chin.

  1. Though his chin is not up to the same par as Holyfield, I would probably have to go with Lennox Lewis as well.

  2. I have to disagree on Lennox Lewis.  He had a terrible chin and nobody in the heavyweight scene had a bigger heart than Evander.  I believe that it was the heart that gave him the ability to stand and fight at times.  To find someone like that, you might have to go out of the heavyweights and look at a De La Hoya or Barrera, who are skilled and have fought wars.

  3. Ridick Bowe a great boxer

  4. Why didn't you just ask the question without automatically inserting Holyfield as #1? I hate it when people do that!!!

  5. Lennox Lewis, without a doubt, was the best technical boxer who could also be a beast of a brawler. Sometimes he was so technically proficient he would be labeled "boring", because many fights he would barely get hit en route to knocking the opponent out. However, if you want proof of his brawling skill (and chin), find a clip of his fight against Ray Mercer, who was a monster hitter in his day. It's a classic fight that went the distance, with both men teeing it up and landing punches that would buckle the foundation of some buildings. ;)

  6. I have to tell you that several champions had the skill of box and brawl skills.  Joe Louis had a very fast and pulverizing jab and was a very effective boxer that once he had you in trouble would turn it on.  He didn't just come in the ring brawling and is arguably the greatest heavyweight champion of all time.  Also Sonny Liston used his powerful jab and 84 inch reach to set up his power punches so he was a mixture of a good boxer/slugger etc.  He won decisions over good boxers in several fights as an example of this.  Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe were certainly known for their boxing skills too but would turn it on as well and even go to the body effectively, so Evander is not alone at the top though he is certainly one of the greatest boxer/sluggers as far as the heavyweights go.  The best of all time in my opinion is Joe Louis!

  7. lennox lewis, rocky marciano, joe louis and mohammed ali

  8. It's Muhammad Ali.

Because of Ali's grace, superb footwork and speed, people overlook the fact that he was also an effective boxer/brawler.

Remember, Ali was a head hunter that hardly ever went to the body, and probably incurred the damage he has today during intense and violent sparring sessions at his Deer Lake camp - sessions in which he went toe to toe with, amongst others, a young and hungry Larry Holmes.

One of the greatest fights in history was the Thrilla in Manilla, in which Muhammad Ali dispensed of any niceties and went toe to toe with Joe Frazier for fourteen brutal rounds, before Eddie Futch mercifully threw in the towel, saving his fighter from any further punishment.

  9. I will admit, Mike Tyson would be the next after Holyfield.
