The New Zealand seam bowler, Iain O’Brien, has become the latest to join the list of international cricketers who have suffered from depression during their cricketing career.
The 35-year-old former Kiwi pacer admitted on Sunday that he had battled depression during his entire career. He told the media reporters that in order to remain normal he kept bullying himself.
"How have I got through to now without doing anything about it? It's different for everyone. But I think I bullied myself into doing things and trying to live normally," the Kiwi seamer told a leading newspaper in an interview
on his 35th birthday.
The right-arm medium pacer from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864 revealed in the interview that he had been hiding his ailment until earlier this year. However, a Michael Vaughan-hosted radio programme regarding depression in cricket convinced him to
seek help and get the problem sorted.
O’Brien made his Test debut in May 2005, against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 at Napier. In his 22 five-dayers,
O’Brien picked up 73 wickets at an average of 33.27 and an economy rate of 3.31.
The right-arm medium pacer debuted in the One Day International format of the game in February 2008 against England at Napier, and played his last One-Dayer in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750. During his 12 month long ODI career, he played
10 matches for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 and claimed 14 wickets at an average of 34.85. He played only four T20 Internationals for Kiwis picking up six wickets.
O’Brien is not the first cricketer to have suffered from depression. Michael Yardy of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Cup 2011 earlier this year due to depression.
After taking rest for almost two months, Yardy returned to action in May with a CB40 match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Netherlands-c753 but after playing county cricket for one month, the Sussex skipper sought another rest period, after suffering a relapse
in his battle against depression.
A former Test batsman and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843 captain Marcus Trescothick have also retired early from the international cricket after suffering from depression.
