After ROTC...Can i stay an Infantryman?

I have already completed Basic Training at Ft. Benning, Ga.

My current MOS is 11B, and i received my promotion to E-4. My question is, since i am currently an ROTC cadet at my college, after i complete the program can i continue to be in the Infantry or do i have to take another MOS in a different field. I want to retire from the military and would love to remain an Infantryman.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

  1. Monty is right. However I didn't do the green to gold program (like I think you're doing now). You should be able to keep your current MOS (which, after your commission, would be called a "branch"). However that is up to your military professor. In all likeliness you may get what you want here. Good luck!

  2. Didn't they inform that you are taking training to be an officer?  You should have a consular to talk to.  They should be able to explain your options.  Been there..

  3. Monty has it right.  Branch assignments are generally based on the needs of the army....however, Infantry is, will be, and always has been, in high demand.  There are always slots avaliable for grunts.  If you want infantry, I think they'd be able to swing that request.  Can't guarantee you'd end up on the line as a PL.  You may end up in HCC as a Liason Officer, or an assistant in one of the S shops....or any number of little staff positions.

EDIT: Oh, and technically, even if you stayed in the Infantry branch your MOS would still change.  You'd be 11A.  11B, 11C, and 11Z are enlisted MOS.....which means you'd still be required to attend Infantry Officer Basic Course to be MOSQ.

  4. You will have to be selected by the Infantry branch after graduation.  If you put infantry as your first choice and put in your packet that you are an 11B, they will pick you.

  5. what branch you get is bases on accessions where you get points and put on what is basically an order of merit list.

i'm pretty sure if you want infantry you will get it.  at the very least you can do a branch detail to it for your first term of service if you get a different branch.
