After Rough Patch, former New York Mets outfielder Lenny Dystra cleaning up act -MLB Update
Lenny Dystra was known to be wild and a party animal during his days as a professional baseball player with the New York Mets in the Major League Baseball (MLB), but now after five-month during in county jail, the former outfielder says that he is cleaning
up his act.
Dykstra termed his time in the jail as a reality check after he had been living it up without any limits outside his rehabilitation facility to now, which he is confined to.
The former MLB player was talking in his first sit-in interview in Los Angeles on November 25, 2011, following a plea in his grand theft auto case nearly five months ago.
"I really for the first time understand humility," Dykstra said during the interview at The Hills rehab center. "It’s not everybody else’s fault. It’s not a coincidence that I’m here. It happened because I was using drugs and alcohol. It was a reality check."
Dykstra helped the Mets, win a World Series championship in 1986, and it is truly disappointing to see a man with such calibre sitting in confinement and facing up to four years in jail.
He termed his decision making back in his playing days as foolish and unworthy as he was addicted to wine, vodka, pain killers and multiple drugs at a single time, spending millions in a matter of days.
“The way I lived my life helped me in baseball. But when you’re spending $28,000 for a bottle of wine and liking it? Nothing was ever enough,” he said, shaking his head. “The punishment gods said, ‘You know what we’re going to do? We’re going to put you
in f---ing jail.”
It is still unclear what sort of breakthrough Dystra might have in regards to his grand theft auto case, but terms himself as not a criminal and someone who did the wrong thing, at the wrong time, but one thing is for sure, at the age of 48, his party lifestyle
has certainly caught up with him and it does not look like it will be leaving him anytime soon.
