After Tour Card what’s next in store for Darren Whittingham?
Since the beginning of his career in the year 2008, all pre-requisites that contribute to the popularity of a player have been going in complete reversal for Market Drayton darts player, Darren Whittingham.
With just 3,550 pounds of earnings in his four year darts career and DDB Ranking of 249, this English darts player was least expected to emerge as the winner of the PDC Tour Card.
However, as they put it, life is certain but filled with innumerable uncertainties. It was precisely on the grounds of sky talking, according to many, that provided Darren the opportunity or the jackpot of his life, the chance of playing for the PDC Circuit.
It is needless to mention that the PDC faction at present contains the current elite of darts through the representation of players like Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis and Raymond van Barneveld.
On one hand, there is the presence of all these champions representing the portfolio of darts, and, on the other hand, there is a rather miniscule presence of amateurs like Darren Whittingham.
Whittingham is among the amateurs who are ready to give up their profession as warehouse operative, to adopt darts as their permanent career and a source of bread and butter.
However, at just 20 years of age, acquiring the status of successfully qualifying for the Tour Card is worth appreciating.
Furthermore, the age at which he has achieved this honour can be an outcome of sheer luck.
Nonetheless, undermining the struggle and determination that he has invested to achieve this status by simply dubbing it as luck would be unjust.
He can be lucky once or twice, even thrice, but for how long? In order to make way into the PDC he defeated players like Wayne Pepper, Paul Davison, James Young, and recent World Championship qualifier Kurt Van De Rijck and Nigel Birch.
It was obvious that after a complete voyage filled with various troubles and toils, his joy for finally making it into the PDC was unprecedented.
"Winning a Tour Card takes the pressure off you because you're guaranteed a place in all the ProTour events, so it's a massive chance for me to get experience and hopefully establish myself,” he said.
"I can still play on the Youth Tour too but my goal now is to qualify for the World Championship next December," he added.
However, once done with the initial bashing and completion of preliminary stages, what more does the future has to place at the disposal of Darren?
This is the million dollar question that is currently making rounds in the mainstream of darts.
Obviously, it is not about making prophecies or predictions but there are a couple of things that are quite clear cut when we talk about or view Darren’s future in darts.
He has the knowledge of the game. There is no doubt about this. He knows the tricks, he is familiar with the tactics and strategies that are applied and he knows when to do and what to do.
Additionally, up till this point of his four year career, this is the only phenomenal achievement he has gained.
If he would have invested the same number of years in developing his own warehouse, he might have easily become the owner of a few warehouses in his hometown, to say the least.
Since this did not happen, it implies that he has a serious attitude towards the game.
This was the breakthrough he was looking for and finally he has grabbed it. It can be said that if luck was not working for him so far, it just might have started to play its role now.
