After a root canal why do pains come and go?

I just had a root canal 2 days ago and now I get like strong pain for like 1-3 seconds and then it goes and it comes back in like 30mins-4 hours. Why? Is it normal?

My dad calls them Phantom Pains because your body still thinks your tooth is there even though it's not.

I had two root canals done about six months ago, and I still get pain here and there.

It's nothing serious.
