Once a judge finalizes the adoption. Does the state automatically mail you a new birth certificate?

  1. My son's adoption was finalized this week.  The attorney who helped me had to fill out a form, along with an order from the judge, which was mailed to the state (Arkansas), along with the appropriate fees ($27), and I was told it would take 4-8 weeks.

Whoever handled your adoption (attorney, foster care department, agency), should be able to tell you.

  2. Part of the paperwork we submitted at the finalization was a request for a new birth certificate. It took a long time (maybe 6 mo?)  because we were adopting in CA and my daughter was born in Georgia. The time varies based on the state.

  3. No.  You have to fill out a form in whatever state the baby was born in.  They will then mail you a new birth certificate.  My form had to be signed by the court at the time of finalization.
