did they get rid of him or did he chose to leave? I think they maybe wanted a more darker Batman and a whole new franchise to get more money so they got a new director in the form of Chris Nolan, who I personally think is just as good as Tim Burton and his latest film The Dark Knight is the best ever Batman film that's been made by anyone.

Sorry...but the answer above mine is completely wrong.

Tim Burton LEFT the franchise because the studio wanted a more kid friendly film and they thought Batman Returns was WAY too dark. That's when Joel Schumacher came in, Michael Keaton left because of this and we ended up with neon lights, one liners and Bat-nipples. After the dismal Batman & Robin...the studio quit making the films. Years later is when they decided to start over....Chris Nolan was tapped and he went back to a Dark Batman...even darker than before and we have what we have now.

About time too. Nolan's is dark and realistic...Burton's was dark and gothic.
