After buying a car, what other steps? Registeration? Insurance?

Question

I am planing to buy a car but I havent bought a car ever in my life. So I want to know what else needs to be done after I hand over the money and want to take car with me. Do I need insurance at that moment? What is registration? Anything else that needs to be done?

Do these steps change when buying a car from a dealer vs. a personal seller?

If you are buying a car that has no insurance and registration the first step you need to do is get it road worthed which means your car you have bought needs to be fully checked and inspected by a mechanic and if it passes he will give you a slip that clears you (It can get pretty expensive, it just matters how greedy the mechanic is). Next you need to get it insured, you will only need to pay for the 3rd party insurance to be able to go on the road (but you can pay more to be covered in case of accidents and theft)  but once you got the 3rd party insurance you are able to drive your car to Main Roads center to get your car registered in your name. You will have to fill out a form stating the cars engine number, previous owner, price etc.. than pay for registration and you will get number plates given to you and you will need to put them on the car straight away. Prices vary for different car types, sizes etc but just make sure you have a few hundred ready. If its from a dealer, the dealer will be able to tell you everything you need to do, but if its personal you will need to do the steps I just explained.. most mechenics are able to do a road worthy and Main Roads are usually in most major suburbs..

make sure you have a spare set of keys that can easily be obtained from someone or somewhere in all the various scenarios in case you lose!!:)

Dont forget to always wear your seatbelt:)
