  1. Not long enough.

  2. The government is FINALLY recognizing the problems that foster care children have when they reach the age of 18 and have no support system to help them.  There are programs now that help them transition - job programs, and some of them can get some help with some money.  It's different in each state, each state interprets the federal regulations differently and goes by what is needed in that particular community.  Before this, a lot of foster care kids either went into the military or lived on the street.

  3. There are now several ways to help not just foster children during the critical young adult years. The big key is that a child who qualifies needs to get into these programs before 18 or there will be gaps and things may still be difficult.

I believe that there are some services now that really make a huge difference. It should be mandated in every state that any former foster child be able to attend state universities or coummunity colleges tuition free. Several states do this and it should be possible for all states to offer the same ops for all children leaving foster care.

If divorced parents who pay child support are required to provide for children if they are attending School I feel that the state should have the same obligation with children from foster care. Right now these kids can obtain school loans or financial aid as an "independent" but that only helps a bit... It would be better if support continued for the foster child just as it does for anyone who has ever had a child support order and a student over the age of 18.

  4. I got them until the month of my 18th birthday, after that I was on my own.

From what I understand though things have changed a bit since then & apparently there are programs to help those teens that find them selves in the same boat I was in
