Question:

After filling in my cavities?

So, I've had my cavities filled in before and usually I can eat almost anything after. However, this time I felt a bit of pain whenever I would bite down. Is this normal? I know that this time my dentist did not give me a shot or numb my gums because it was small. How long until my tooth is back to normal? Should I get it checked right away or wait a couple days? Thanks.

  1. If your dentist had to drill wide or deep for your filling, it's probably a little sensitive, even with the filling material covering the opening. It's possible that he or she touched a nerve or, if the fillings are slightly built up, when you're bringing your teeth together they could be putting more pressure on the tooth than you're used to.

  2. Did he test your bite? Usually after you get a filling, they test your bite by sticking a special piece of paper in your mouth, and then they can see if the filling is too high. If it was too high, biting down would put more pressure on that tooth than other other tooth. Not sure if this is your first time with the composite fillings (or even if you had composite filling, but most dentists office use this), but these fillings can cause more pain/sensitivity in your tooth. Not gonna lie, some of these fillings can hurt up to 3 months, but most of the time the pain subsides within a couple of weeks, maybe even a couple days. If it hurts for longer than a week, I would call your dentist just to make sure nothing is wrong. Take some pain reliever medication in the mean time if you need it.

  3. Wait for couple of days. If the pain does not go away or diminish show to the doc.
