I have my BA in Spanish, & people tell me that my degree means NOTHING, & that I'll never get anywhere, & that I'll never succeed, & that I'm talking out of my head, being irrational & unrealistic, simply because I suffer mental illnesses.

  1. It depends on your degree. Mine is in engineering, so I have never been told that my degree is worthless.

  2. I am afraid of that happening to me, even though I am a business major. At the same time, certain fields are very competitive so it may feel as if a degree is worth nothing when it all comes down to personal connections and outside factors which you may have less control over.

In your case, earning a degree in Spanish is great and you can always apply it across several fields. You can trying teaching, marketing, research, traveling as a translator, journalism. It really comes down to what you want to do with it.  I feel sorry for what you have to go through, and I really hope you will be able to show to those people that your work paid off. Start small, think large, and hope for the best.

    Good luck!

  3. It's work experience that counts when you apply for a job.  Without it, your application is weak unless your degree offers something that the employer is looking for (a marketable degree; i.e. engineering, accounting, etc).  In these cases, a  degree will substitute for a weak employment history.  However, without a marketable degree, you don't even have that option.

A bachelors degree itself is no longer even an a major advantage as it was twenty years ago.  In larger coastal cities, something like 50% of all people under 30 have a 4 year degree.  You need to stand out to get hired; companies only want to take the best out there.

  4. You are not being irrational or unrealistic to expect that the degree that you worked so hard for would do you some good now.

I know you are having trouble getting a job and that makes it seem as if it your degree means nothing. It does mean something. You worked hard for it and you DO have a college degree which many people do not.

  5. Well first of all, Congratulations on EARNING your degree ! That is quite an accomplishment. I don't know who these people are that are telling you this, but they don't appear to be very caring people or very good friends. You worked very hard to get that degree and you WILL succeed. No matter what anyone tells you, you go for your dreams and you hold your head up high !!!!!
