After her epic third place finish in the Presque Isle Maters, Shotgun Gulch is being considered for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint
Owner and breeder, C. R. Trout, is keeping his 4-year-old filly, Shotgun Gulch, at his farm in Oklahoma for a few days for freshening, following the Pennsylvania race on 10 September, 2011.
Shotgun Gulch’s connections have put her under serious consideration for the Grade 1, $1million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, after her fast third place finish in the Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters.
Run at Presque Isle Downs on 10 September, 2011, over a distance of 6 ½ furlongs over Poly Track, Shotgun Gulch never looked in contention to even finish on the money.
Shotgun Gulch broke for the eighth post on the inside in a field of 12 runners. She lost the advantage when she came wide into the stretch.
However, under strong urging from jockey Luis Quinonez, Shotgun Gulch responded in style and she went all out in the final yards, closing in on the leaders fiercely to finish 3rd behind the winner, Musical Romance, and the runner-up, Ariana D.
Another reason for why they are looking at the Breeders’ Cup is that there will be the same kind of fillies and mares Shotgun Gulch has run against in other places.
In Shotgun Gulch’s third race of the current season, the filly bagged her first win in the Grade 1 Madison over Keeneland’s Poly Track on 14 April, 2011, over a distance of 7 furlongs.
The filly went from back to front in no time and finished a good race, defeating Amen Hallelujah and Dr. Zic. They finished second and third, respectively, as Shotgun Gulch covered the distance in 1 minute and 24.14 seconds.
Meanwhile, owner C. R. Trout is looking at the Oklahoma Classics Night Program at Shotgun Gulch’s hometown course, Remington Park.
Shotgun Gulch is also the Oklahoma Thoroughbred Association’s reigning horse of the year.
Most probably the daughter of Thunder Gulch, out of Rosieville by Boston Harbor, Shotgun Gulch will be pointed to $130,000 Oklahoma Classics Distaff Sprint on 28 October, 2011.
The fillies and mares that could meet Shotgun Gulch in the Breeders’ Cup sprint could probably be Musical Romance, Irish Gypsy, Ultra Bend and Tanda.
