  1. If you wrap the thread around the tip of your index finger and roll it in one direction with your thumb then pull it will knot. Then you sew. With practice it gets easy. Also, don't put the thread through the needle, put the needle over the thread. Sounds funny but try it. It is somehow easier to do.......

  2. Depending on what you're sewing, you can do it one of two ways:

For a seam where you want a single thread, you pull a length of thread through the needle (several inches or so) and tie a knot at the end of the long thread. Use the rolling-the-thread method of tying the knot, where you form a loop at the end and roll it through your fingers to form the knot. You want at least a double or triple knot, to make sure it sticks in the fabric. When you then start sewing, you push the needle through the fabric and pull it through until about an inch of the thread is through the hole. Then finish pulling the thread through by pulling on the thread strands themselves, so the short end of the thread doesn't slip out of the needle.

For something like a button, you can double or even quadruple the thread. This requires less stitches, because you're pulling through two or four threads at a time. To double the thread, you pull the short end of the thread out as long as you think you'll need for the whole job. You then cut the spool end of the thread, pull the two ends to the same length, and make the knot at the end of both threads together.

For a quadruple thread, you pull a piece of thread off the spool that is about 4 times the length you'll need. Then you bring the ends together and straighten out the thread, so that you can find the exact middle of the thread. You then fold the thread at this point and push the folded end through the needle (this can be a bit tough for a needle with a small eye). You then double this like you did the double thread and tie the knot to secure all 4 threads together.
