  1. When you swear in at MEPS you'll be swearing into the DEP. You can back out of the DEP at any time. When you go up to MEPS again the day you leave for boot camp you'll swear into the actual service and your four-year contract.

  2. Your contract doesn't start until you the day you leave for Basic.  You will take your final oath before leaving.  Yes, you can leave DEP at anytime for any reason.  But, the recruiter will give you a hard time but they must release you if you ask.

  3. I was told your time in DEP counts toward your service. However, I may be incorrect. In the Reserves, you only take one oath, and your in... in this scenario your time would start the very same day.

Yes you can back out DEP. You have to swear in twice, if your enlisting in active duty. If you are unsure, DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING.

  4. No, you are not committed until you "ship" from MEPS to your BCT post.   Also, you are  "provisional" for lack of a better term, until you graduate BCT and AIT.  Once you arrive at your first duty station, then you are ARMY.  Look, if you are having doubts, talk to your family, your recruiter, and anyone else who you value an opinion from.  If you do ship, and then decide to leave or go AWOL, stay away for 31 days.  That way you will be listed as a deserter and the rest of your unit doesn't have to deal with you.  Good Luck.

  5. Generally at MEPS they do have you sign a contract.  If you are having questions like this come up then go to MEPS and don't sign anything. Just like everyone else says the contract does not start ubtil the day you get to basic.

  6. your recruiter might say otherwise but no your contract doesn't start until you hit BCT and yes you can back out of DEP at any time for any reason prior to BCT

  7. During DEP, you're not active at all, and no your 4 yrs (actually 8 yrs, 4 reserve and depending on your rate could be 6 yrs active, 2 reserve) do not begin with that contract.

You go active the date you ship out to boot camp.

During DEP you can back out, you will be considered a DEP Loss that's all.

You will not be able to back out after you sign the 2nd contract, the 2nd time you go to MEPS for your ship out date and 2nd oath.

  8. You can change your mind about anything you want before your ship date. It is possible for you to back out of the dep but make sure that is what you really want to do. Be advised that if you choose to back out you will get a stern lecture from your recruiter and you can be sure that they will try to talk you down. They are required to do this. I am not telling you what to do. You must do what you know is right for yourself.
