  1. Recall the way scientific taxonomy works: animals are classified together based on evolutionary relationships. The levels of this grouping are Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. In between each level, prefixes like sub or infra (below the level) or super or ultra (above the level) fill out the fine details.

Primates are an order within the scientific (also called Linnean) taxonomy. The next highest (commonly used) level is the infraclass of Placental Mammals, which would include most of the mammals we see every day (21 living orders including order Carnivore--dogs, cats, etc., order Artiodactyls--Cows, deer, etc., rodents--rats, mice, hamsters, etc. and of course order Primates). A complete list of orders is in the Wikispecies link below.

Not all mammals are placental mammals--mammals which are more distantly related include monotremes (duck billed platypus) and marsupials (kangaroos, koalas, etc.).

You (or your child) might reasonably ask which of the placental mammal orders is MOST closely related to humans. That level of phylogenetic detail is not well established, however order Dermoptera (flying lemurs, of which there are only two known species) or order Scandentia (tree shrews) are strong candidates.

Bats (order Chiroptera) have also been suggested (see Adkins and Honeycutt for some background), although they are probably more distantly related than the other two.

A good chart of these relationships can be found at the Wikipedia link below.

  2. Order-Dermopetra, e.g Flying lemurs  &

    Order-Scandentia, e.g tree shrews.

  3. Monkeys

  4. After primates? I thought they were still real.

  5. Order Insectivora and order Scandentia..;.

  6. Humans are Primates

The most closely related primates are the great apes, the closest of those being the bonobo (pygmy chimpanzee) the other great apes in descending order are chimpanzees, gorillas and orang-atangs. After the great apes comes the gibbons. In following order of primates (by group) are the Old World Monkeys, New World Monkeys, Marmosets and finally among primates the Prosimians. Prosimians are a more ancient line of primates which include bushbabies, lorises, lemurs and tarsiers.

Outside primates, the two closest orders related to humans are Chiroptera (bats) and Scandentia (tree shrews). I'm not sure which of two is more related to primates as the three lineages split at about the same time
