the personal allowance by £600 to £6035 for the Under 65s. What did they do for the over 65s?

As the over 65s probably represent almost the majority of people who bother to vote, will the Government regret their treatment of the elderly?

  1. Oh yes they will.

Miserly pension increases, cuts in care for people who have probably worked for 40 odd years, paying tax and NI, or bringing up families.

The food and fuel price rises will hit them hard, especially those whose health and mobility is compromised.

There was a haunting programme on Channel 4 some months ago called something like 'to heat or eat?'.  Next winter will be 100 times worse for them than last winter was.

Not just the elderly, we should all make a protest at the coming (?when) election.

  2. 'steffi' as a retired civil servant on a gold plated inflation proof pension your knowledge of people struggling to get by on the state pension is minimal. This government will learn at the next election I hope what pensioners think of their lack of action over escalating council tax, fuel and food prices. A Labour Government? Don't make me laugh because Brown would probably tax it.

  3. to uk action man could I recomend you try education we pay enough tou appear to have wasted yours

  4. The over 65s were hardly affected were they?

The effect was felt by people who retired at 60 but don't get state pension until 65.

Over 65s get an allowance of £9030 which is 50% more.

I don't really see your point.

  5. Over 65s have a higher personal allowance.

  6. You've got your knickers in a twist. Everyone gets the new basic Personal Allowance.

  7. When Gordon Brown as Chancellor scrapped the 10% band, he put up age allowance for the over 65s, so that they would not be charged the extra tax. Then the fuss erupted, one of the reasons was that women pensioners between the ages of 60 and 64 had to pay extra tax, and so were discriminated against, when older pensioners didn't have to pay extra.

The only way the Government could come up with to prevent this was to increase the tax allowance for all 64s and under.

So you are suggesting pensioners get two benefits, when the new plans were originally announced, and now.

As an under-65 pensioner myself, I think older pensioners do quite well tax-wise. Age allowance for 65 - 74 is £9030, 75 and over £9180. That is compared to the new personal allowance of £6035 for younger people.

What I do not think is fair is that married pensioners born before 05/04/1935 also get a marriage allowance of £6535, and those 75 and over get £6625. That is discriminatory against younger pensioners, who cannot claim this. The Government retained the allowance, when it was abolished, for older pensioners to try to retain that vote. Generally the Government bends over backwards to give pensioners extra tax concessions.

  8. Increased pensions;free bus passes, free swimming from next year.

    Not bad.

  9. Labour will regret their policy instigated by Gordon Brown to forget the pensioner! It is a true statement that pensioners are the biggest voting block!

The trouble with Labour is!They have always taken the pensioner for granted when it comes to voting! But it is not the case now!

To give you an example! My Father and Mother were life long Labour voters!Myself!I voted for them for 50years!Would I vote for them again! No!Why?They have betrayed their 'grass roots'!And favoured the ethnic minority's and the 'protest groups such as Tony Juniper and Shami Chakrabarti!

Yes!Labour! Will have a big shock coming when the next General Elections come around!Sweeteners and 'bribes' will not do them any good either!

  10. I'll tell you what they've done for the over 65s who've worked for them in the past......... Given them MASSIVE fcukin pentions that we pay for.

And theyve hired Hundreds of thousands more people in such Jobs as "Nappy Outreach advisors"...... and given them massive pentions "N" all !

    CNUTS.
