After shocking a pool, when can you swim?

Our pool man shocked the pool yesterday in the early afternoon, we have waited 24 hours. Is the pool safe to swim in? We don't have a tool to test the chlorine levels as we don't care for the pool ourselves.

  1. You should wait at least an hour after shocking the pool and then still check the chlorine level to make sure it is ok.  You want the chlorine to be under 5.0ppm before you swim.  Even a level close to 5.0 may bleach out your suit and hair some but it won't harm you physically.
