  1. In our department, you only need a highschool diploma or GED to get hired as a cop. You will be given a U.A. at hiring. Officers are not required to take random drug tests. Staying in shape is not a requirement but it is a good idea.

  2. Obviously not the state of PA....

  3. If physical testing was a part of every, or even most law enforcment organizations, then we would probably have less then 50% of each  current forces personal passing the test... (even most of the thin ones are out of shape)

  4. Some agencies do but most don't require it.  If I was in charge all of them would have to pass one every year.  My agency is currently working towards this.

I'm a Certified Fitness Instructor for my State's Academy and I would love to see all Officers have to pass the POPAT once a year.  They have to do it to get certified but once they get certified most never have to do it again.

Scroll down to the lesson on Fitness and you can read all about the POPAT:

  5. It all depends on your location, and the Department in which you are hired with.

You will most likely need to take and pass a fitness test before you are hired, and even sometimes in the Police Academy.

However, it varies between Depts. whether or not they mandate fitness testing when you are hired, or not.  I believe in New York the are required to take a test every year.  But, don't quote me on that.

I do know some Depts. do this, but most do not.

  6. Each agency is different.  Some require physical testing after your hired and some don't.  For example, the agency I work for does not require you to pass a physical fitness test after your hired.  However, to be in a specialized unit (Swat, K9) you have to pass a more stringent fitness test.  The standards are harder than the state mandated requirements.  Failure to maintain of pass the standard excludes you from selection or your booted from the unit.

Also, agencies like Chicago Police Dept, offer a bonus incentive to being fit.  They offer $500 twice a year to pass a physical fitness test.  However, it's optional and not required.  Should a person fail, no bonus.

  7. Well not in my dept, but most of the officers usually stay in good shape because they don't want the one losing there breath while they are chasing a suspect, etc.

  8. well maybe every 5 years or so, but i dont think it's all hard and stuff, and i dont even think there is one but, if there is it'll probably be after 5 years or so.

  9. Have you seen some of them lately?

  10. No,

    not where I live.
