After sprinting in his two last starts, Caleb’s Posse goes long in the Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park
The Cheyenne Stables and McNeill Stables owned 3-year-old colt, Caleb’s Posse, is on a roll since 1 August, 2011, landing a grade 1 and a grade 2 race up till now under his new jockey, Rajiv Maragh. He will make his next start in the $500,000 Indiana Derby
at Hoosier Park on 1 October, 2011.
The Donnie Von Hemel trained colt, has picked up 4 wins altogether out of 8 starts in the 2011 season, but has been impressive with his last two races, which were cutback in distance, ranging from 6 ½ furlongs to 7 furlongs.
Among his last two starts, Caleb’s Posse has gone on to win the Grade 2 Amsterdam at Saratoga on 1 August, 2011. The young horse, who loves to run on dirt, relished the conditions and seized the opportunity when it presented itself.
He ran down Wine Police and Redeemed in the 6 ½ furlong dash, covering the distance in 1 minute and 15.88 seconds.
Already three wins under his belt, trainer Donnie Von Hemel fancied the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes, the other among his last two starts.
Primarily, it was to test his colt against 2010 2-year-old champion, Uncle Mo.
The race was run over a distance of 7 furlongs on 27 August, 2011, and Caleb’s Posse brought in the momentum he gathered from his last win in the Grade 2 Amsterdam.
Though Uncle Mo was coming off a 5 month layoff, he gave Caleb’s Posse a tough time and got nosed out by the winner to lose his first start since May.
The son of Posse out of Abbey’s Missy by Slewacide, Caleb’s Posse will be stretching out to 1 1/16 miles in the Indiana Derby, after his successful runs over shorter distances.
The 3-year-old colt has shown he can also take down two turn stakes' races, and the proof of that is the Grade 3 Ohio Derby at Thistledown on 4 June, 2011, under jockey E Razo.
With the Breeders’ Cup around the corner, Donnie Von Hemel has set his eyes on the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and maybe that is why Caleb’s Posse is going to run a couple of races on longer distances before the big race.
