Question:

After strabismus surgery.. will I see better??

Exactly a week (7 days) has passed since my strabismus surgery.

My eyes are now normally aligned, and I realised that some eye strain also went away.

However, I still have some more eye strain. I am still not using both eyes at the same time, though they now look aligned as normal.

Can I expect further improvements after waiting more time like a month or so?? Or should I satisfy myself with the current results???

Ideally, I'd want to gain more coordination with both eyes and still less eye strain. Would that be possible?

Thanks for all your answers....

  1. My daughter will be going in for strabismus surgery at the end of this month.  My understanding is that it should reduce eyestrain and help your eyes work together, but it can take quite a while for your brain to kind of get used to receiving the same inputs from both eyes at once.  If you have a refractive error however (if you're nearsighted or farsighted - my daughter is farsighted) the surgery will not change that.  So if you've needed glasses before this, you will still need glasses afterwards.

There may be some eye exercises that you could do to get your brain used to having your eyes working together.  I would talk with your eye doctor about it.

Best of luck to you!  I'm happy to hear that your eyes are aligned!  I'm a bit worried about my daughter's surgery, but excited if her eyes align and she can begin to have her eyes working together.

  2. Hi,

I had a similar surgery on July 14th.  For me it took me almost two full weeks before my brain kind of figured out that things had changed.  Once that happened things got better for me and much of the strain went away.  Hang in there - I suspect things will get better for you soon.  It can take up to 6 weeks for everything to heal and settle in.
