After you become a physician assistant how do you specialize? ?

I wanted to know what do you do after you complete the PA program to get an specialization in cardiology, neurology, pediatrics or others? where do you get it???

  1. Contact the AAPA and ask them about accredited programs for fellowships in these specialties. Be prepared for an even crappier schedule. Some specialties can be on the job training as well. Good luck


  2. After initial training at the school, students select the specialization they are interested in.  In my daughter's case that is emergency room.  She will be sent for internship to emergency rooms affiliated with the school.  

  3. There are 3 basic ways:

    1. formal residency program (1-2 years) offered by a recognized PA residency program

    2. On the job training

    3. More informal training program offered at a hospital--ie a 6 month training program in CT surgery, neuro etc

    The AAPA can help, the state chapter can help as well. Also, look in the classified sections of PA journals.  They list residencies & training programs.

  4. you have to apply to a school that specalizes in any of those ares of interest, its like grad school. you might be able to apply to offices and get traning from the physician,
