  1. While the compass is near the magnet or a magnetic field, the compass will be off. That is why you don't want to mount a compass near the engine of a car or boat. However, once the magnetic field is gone, the magnet is as accurate as it was before.

    north or south?

    if you have a compass pointing north, and you move a magnet near it, what happens? Does the compass still point in the same direction? If not, how does that affect accuracy?
