After you look at bright lights (i.e. the sun), why do you see spots?

  1. Because you have done a bit of damage to the retina which can be compensated for. Don't do that!


  2. After looking at a bright light such as the sun, it can stimulate the retina to its maximum response. It then takes a while for the retina to recover. You may see spots or you may not be able to see well for a short time.

  3. Our eyes are able to differentially adjust their light sensitivity so we can see detail in both bright areas and shadow. (eg. think of a camera for comparison, shadows become dark and highlights washed out because they don't have this ability)

    When you look at a very bright object like the sun, this leaves an imprint in your vision (like a film negative) because the receptors in your eye are still adapted for bright light.
