our builder asked us how many square footage would we want our new house, i know how big i want each room.

  1. Your math is correct. Your assumption is wrong.

    It is not ONLY how many square feet per room, but how they fit together. That is one reason why it takes some archetectual skills to design a house.

    The best bet is for you to tell him the dimension of EACH room, identify the room, and letting him choose the plans that meet your needs. You need to check those plans before either of you commits. It may be difficult to meet your exact numbers, especially with a good layout.


  2. that should be close enough for him   IE; 10 ft X10ft  = 100 square feet .  length times width

  3. last time i built a house for someone using that method, they ended up with a house so big that they ended up selling it and buying a smaller one.

  4. No  you multiply the length by the width:  example  10X12= your answer.

  5. If you draw the floor plan as to how all the rooms and hallways connect, just multiply the overall length by the overall width. as in 50' long by 30' wide would be 50x30=1500 square feet. Or yes, you would add all the rooms together.
