Question:

Aftermarket Air filter for VW polo?

I have a 1.0l Vw polo, 1996, and I'm looking to get an aftermarket air filter for it. I have grown tired of the sound of the engine, and want to increase my fuel economy as I have to drive to college every day.

My question is can I attach the cone filter straight to the existing intake pipe that runs into the airbox (Obviously removing the original filter too!). Also, will removing the hot air intake matter? It is connected to the existing cold air intake.

I can run some ducting from the front of the car if I need to.

Thanks!

  1. You'll get minimal improvement no matter what you do, and you certainly won't get any improvement in fuel economy.

If you do fit an aftermarket filter, it's best to draw in the coolest air you can, as cold air is more dense & therefore produces more power & efficiency, but you'd get the same effect with the standard air filter drawing air from the same position.

  2. look on KandN.com.they make the best filters.

  3. k&n make a panel filter that goes in the standard airbox so you don't have to worry about heat shields etc.  it won't change engine sound or fuel economy though.

if you want to change the sound you need to look at the exhaust-  but since you obviously want to save money you'd be crazy to spend money on an exhaust you don't need.

as for fuel consumption, there aren't really any mods you could do to make a noticable difference- just keep it running right.
