Aftermarket speaker problems?

Question

In my 97 lumina, i just put two aftermarket 6x9s in replacement the factory rear speakers. Now, there is very little bass. (thats what i was hoping to get more of) But, when i turn the balance to one side, there is plenty of bass. but when i turn it back to neutral, it is bassdead. What would cause this? Also, what is the k**b behind the volume that says SCV?
