Aftermarket stereo system in a 2001 VW Jetta

Question

I have a 2001 VW Jetta with the Monsoon sound system. I would like to install an aftermarket headunit,but I have heard that in removing the factory headunit,the VW dealer can no longer use VAG-COM (diagnostic system) on my car.Apparently VAG-COM works through the headunit? Is anyone familiar with this system and couldnt I just re-install the factory headunit,if I needed to?

That is not one hundred percent true.  However, there have been incidents that VAG-COM does get affected by the aftermarket headunit.  If I were you, shop around for an audio installer, and ask them if they are aware of this. If they are, ask them what do they do to prevent it from happening.
