Question:

Aftermath of stem cell research?

I understand that many cures could possibly be detected and created through this process. However, now that we've solved one problem (with curing a fatal illness) now are we going to be dealing with another problem.., overpopulation? Does anyone think it will get to the point where higher figures will dictate to us how many children we can have (if any) to control overpopulating due to new-age cures and masses of survivors? I guess I do support stem cell research, only because it might cure one of my own family members one day. Just wanted to hear people's thoughts.

  1. Most of the 1st world isn't increasing in numbers.  There is no problem except the third world.  Limit immigration and the problem will solve itself.  The problem of overpopulation in the third world is probably much more related to stopping diseases.  I doubt any of the cures from stem cell would affect them much.

  2. We are going to have to deal with population issues eventually. People treat their reproduction and children quite irresponsibly, even in this country.

Eventually, we're going to have to have a rational way of dealing with this. Sane policy on birth control, an end to religious based propaganda against it. Let's just hopes it happens before Soylent Green.

  3. how many over populated countries is there?

and how many of those are poor ones?

Are the countries that are wealthy more so to populate with common sense?

    Is culture an issue here?

    Is religon a issue here?

find those answers and you should get yours

  4. Look around you, its already happening.  Not because of stem cell research, but population control.  In China they limit the number and sexes of children you can have.  Here we stuff birth control down everyones throat and encourage abortion.

But the largest problem with your theory is that these diseases takes years if not decades to kill people.  Giving them a better quality of life is what we are doing, not saving them from death.  Things like cancer, parkinsons, alzheimers, quadrapelgics, ect arent reducing the population because their disease takes so long to kill them.

What controls are population are things like vehicular accidents, natural disasters, wars, massive accidents.

Living 30-40 years in misery vs living that time with out misery does not really add to a population problem.

  5. population is a real concern.

but the US is not directly affected yet.

only when that does happen will there be a push to address the issue.

  6. Overpopulation partly occurs because of a lack of health care. If you're a farmer in India and your kids die at an early age you're going to want to have more kids to make sure you can keep your farm going. So if stem cell research could cure the diseases or whatever that are occurring in the third world countries and they were given foreign aid to help supply those farmers with the treatment, then overpopulation could be solved...of course over a long period of time.
