Afternoon tea in London's westend/city for a 12 year old boy?

I want to take my little brother who is 12 for afternoon tea in the west end/city. He loves cakes etc. I would imagine that The Ritz is a bit too much for him - but he is quite comfortable with nice restaurants. Is there somewhere lovely - yet funky perhaps? I was at first thinking The Wolseley... St Martins in the fields is closed till October. Any other ideas?? Just out of curiousity- which is the hotel that do fashion cakes? Berkeley Hotel? Would that be too girly?

Thanks!!

  1. try harvy nicoles in knightsbrige. or harrods. they both have excelent places for a nice tea. both on theire top floor. the harvey nicoles one is really nice, and on a good day you can sit out side and have a view of the whole area. harrods have better cakes if you are seated by the window it can be very plesent.

  2. 1. Fortnum & Mason do a great afternoon tea. They are refurbishing at the mo so its now on the 3rd floor but still v. lovely.

    2. A hotel that isn't too stuffy and easy to book (ie. can get a table at short notice) but does an amazing tea is the Four Seasons on Park Lane.

    3. Browns hotel  on Abemarle St may fit the bill. A bit more funky than a pure traditional hotel but still v. classy.

You are right that the fashionista tea is at the Berkeley - never been there myself. The Wolseley is great for breakfast and lunch/dinner but I wouldn't recommend it for afternoon tea. You want comfy chairs you can chill out in for that. The Wolseley is all a bit too 'upright' and 'dinning' for a really full on relaxing tea.
