I've got a very unexciting family from Waddesdon Buckinghamshire who spent their whole lives as ag labs in the same little village.

Then in 1881 they disappear and the closest match I can find is in Norfolk, but with a different surname.

In 1871 - Waddeson

Annie Munday 7

Elizabeth Munday 6

Ephraim Munday 31

Etarah Munday 35

George Munday 2

William Munday 8 months

In 1891 Waddesdon

Atarah Munday 55

Ephraim Munday 51

Sarah Munday 18

William Munday 20

Reckon this is them in 1881 in Thurston, Norfolk

All born Waddeson.

Occupation navvy.

Annie Saveings 18

Atarah Saveings 46

George Saveings 12

John Saveings 42

Sarah Saveings 8

William Saveings 10

Interestingly I found someones tree on Ancestry that has Atarah's mothers name as Savings.

So what do you think? On the run? Atarah has found a new bloke? Went on holiday and drank too much gin?

  1. Atarah's maiden name is Atkins, Married Ephraim 1857 Aylesbury, Bucks. They are in the 1871-91-1901 census, I think they were omitted from 1881 census, either visiting someone on census day or papers lost etc. Have you tried searching for their children in 1881.

  2. I had the same thing happen in my family. I do know for certain that they did  a *moonlight flit* to avoid the police, this is really well documented, I know what they stole, where they hid it, and I even know which *LADY* was the real villain. They did a  mf, and then sent another family member back to Nottingham to recover the  stolen goods. They returned to Nottingham five years later with another new name and moved to a different area.
