To help him deal with / understand adoption. I am looking into trying to find some books to help our son understand adoption / maybe why he can't see mommy anymore...etc! He is having a hard time dealing with some of these issues! If anyone has any advice it would be most appreciated.

  7. hi there i dont have any advice for this situation but maybe you could try looking on ebay or amazon for an adoption book or something. i use books for children. com to get books for my daughter they have a wide selection,  maybe try there.

    i wish you luck

  8. although not exactly what you're looking for, you might look into books that attempt to explain divorce...easy to find...check the public library...and you can expound on the discussion to suit your needs.

Also consider some movies.  Just about every G-rated movie in existance has some take on an adoption sotry...Cinderella, Dumbo, Snow White, etc.  Choose carefully.

I'd also try to focus on books that talk about ethics and self-worth...something to read and work TOWARD...progress you and he can hope for.

  9. I have found a list I think might be helpful if he enjoys picture books. http://www.amazon.com/Adoption-Picture-B...

  10. If you are adopting from the foster care system, one great book for kids up to 8 years old or maybe older if they are emotionally and developmentally younger is "My Foster Care Journey"  by Beth O'Malley.  It is like a lifebook, but very nicely done.

Also, check out her work in general.  There might be other things.  She is an adoptive mother and an adoptee and she cares alot about children.

ANother GREAT book is "A Simple Brown Leaf" by LJ Davis.  It is about how a leaf changes over time, but reading it with your child can have excellent discussion about your child's life.   Two main characters are a leaf and a squirrel.  It is beautiful because the overall message to the child is that he/she is loved and needed over all the courses and changes of life.  Art is fantastic.

The final recommendation I can give comes from Mr. Rogers of TV Fame.  The book is called "Lets Talk About it: Adoption"  It has pictures of adoptive families so that the child can relate to what is going on in the book.  The pictures depict the emotions in the family and pretty much cover alot of scenarios.

That's all I got.  Hope it helped....

  11. Sorry but you want a WHAT??? A BOOK?

Get a therapist already. Seriously. This is not even close to the kind of problem Dr. Suess can fix.

So ask his therapist what age appropriate book are available with that kind of subject matter...

Also I have a life and am far from stupid. When my children have SERIOUS issues I look toward trained professionals for help. Ask my daughter's psych and OT team and yes they have suggested age appropriate reading materials geared toward children with sensory disorders.
