Age is just a number for Roger Federer in the hunt for gold – Tennis Special
World number one, Roger Federer, is un-debatably the greatest of all tennis players of our time. The Swiss professional insists that his Wimbledon conquest will set to be a warning to his Olympic competitors.
The 30-year-old returns at Wimbledon only three weeks after he defeated the British star, Andy Murray. He added the seventh Wimbledon title to his rack, but the Swiss legend’s thirst seems endless. The reigning world number one
is ever agile and proactive this season as he radiates full confidence to dominate the scene; silencing the tennis critics claim of being a veteran player.
Federer believes the Wimbledon crown is highly prestigious to him as he secured that title at a retiring age. It was big help for him to boost his confidence for the remaining season and retain the top ranking in the world. The
other contenders like Djokovic, Murray and Nadal are considerably less in age than him but cannot put a barrier to his dream of winning a gold medal at the field of All-England-Club.
In a press conference, Federer informed the media, “Winning Wimbledon has definitely sunk in now, especially when I look at the draw here and see I'm the number one seed. It has not been that way in some time. I always believed
I would get back to number one. I knew my game was strong. I had a couple of tough losses last year that stopped me going further and maybe get back to number one earlier. However, the good thing is I never gave up and started to play better, especially at
Wimbledon when the pressure was so high.”
Embodied in perfection completely, Federer focused on his game play this season. He will be the defending gold medallist this season in men’s doubles with fellow compatriot, Stanislas Wawrinka. However, he is hopeful to cap on
the major individual honour, which the top seeded player has never tasted in the past.
Olympics 2012 will indeed be a great chance for Federer to grab the missing title. The Swiss Maestro’s chances of winning a gold medal have significantly improved after the sudden withdrawal of the defending champion, Nadal. Despite
of the maintaining pressure on the world number one, he still believes in securing that he can beat the odds with his experience and resolve.
The Wimbledon champion faces a tough challenge of a tighter margin in the event. The Swiss professional stated that a few bad points can cost him a loss of the entire tournament. Hence, he will try his best to avoid making the
slightest of errors in the match.
Federer is amongst the favourite contenders for the Olympic gold. The legends staircase to the golden glory is relatively effortless as compared to his opponents. In the first round, he defeated Alejandro Falla by 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Nonetheless, he will have to face a taxing tournament by the hands of Spanish David Ferrer and Juan Martin del Potro in the same half of the draw.
The 30-year-old Swiss expects to compete in the Olympic finals against either Djokovic or Murray. Both the players have faced some thrashing losses at the hands of Federer in the recent past.
