Age limit on volunteers?

I want to volunteer at the local hospital, but they all want vounteers 15+. I'm 14. I'm VERY responsible and can easily get my vice principal, head of discipline, and school counselor to vouch for me along with parental consent. With all this, do you think they will allow me to volunteer or is it because of insurance reasons?

  1. Many organizations keep policy guidelines like this in order to meet safety an insurance guidelines.  Also, they may feel that people under a certain age lack the maturity and qualifications needed to volunteer.  However, I would say go ahead and apply, especially if you have letters of recommendation and are very adamant about volunteering.  I feel that they would be impressed by your tenacity and in your case, would bend the rules a little.  If they don't, at least you have let them know your intent and perhaps you could ask them if they know of another volunteer opportunity you would be qualified for.

I think you're awesome for even considering being a volunteer!  It is one of the most important privileges we have as citizens living in a free society.  :)  As you get older, don't forget to consider AmeriCorps or Peace Corps!  :)

  2. Usually policy and insurance.  Basically it is easier for them to just say no to under 15 than to have to ask for/review personal referances.   I would try a different sort of volunteering until you are 15 or try to get your parents to volunteer with you!

  3. all you can do is try... i mean the worst thing they can do is say no... so just go for it...
