Age makes QB Ben Roethlisberger intensify workout to be in shape and play football for more years – NFL News
Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, confirmed to have had a meeting with his coach, Mike Tomlin, after his return to the city from the Pro Bowl trip to Hawaii last week, and said that the topic of his football future was a part of their
discussion around various undisclosed issues that had come up at the meeting.
He said that he had discussed his fast aging factor and potential career left for him in the wake of aspect with the head coach, as now it requires him more efforts and workout to remain in shape and fit to play football for more years.
Ben said:
"When I talked to Mike, I said I don't know how much longer I have to play, no one does; it could be two years, three years, it could be eight years. Who knows?"
He added:
"I'm hoping that I'm just starting in my prime. I've already been working out with (Garrett Giemont), our strength coach, already. I've never worked out this early. It's not like high-intensity, out killing myself, but I'm working out, I want to come to
camp lighter than I've ever come, in better shape, because as you get to a certain point, a certain age in this football thing, your body doesn't recover like it used to."
The player is approaching to his 30th birthday and the maturity of his age has made him to intensify his workout, and in the face of realisation of the fact, he has already started working on his fitness well before the team’s training and fitness
camp.
Big Ben has been training and doing some workout on his fitness in the team’s training facility since his comeback to Pittsburgh, and apparently no one is surprised by his extra efforts due to his admitted age factor.
The player is in the middle of his renewed eight-year deal, which he had signed in 2008, and he is obviously wary of the fact that from now on he will have to do more on his fitness level every year.
Reports of the possible change in his workout regime come after his agent’s comments of his willingness on his client behalf to renegotiate his deal with his team, with likelihood of a cut in his financial benefits.
Roethlisberger is on a $102 million eight-year deal with his team and with almost half through now he faces cut in his remuneration to help his team fulfil their aim of reducing down their players’ salaries expense, which is well above the cap.
Ben along with linebacker, James Harrison, and others is on an expensive contract from Steelers and the team management has already hinted at restructuring of deal terms of some of the high-paid players.
They have released one player, while another is on the same verge.
