Question:

Age of Majority in BC (Canada)?

It is my opinion that the legal age of majority should be 16 (for Credit Cards, Lotto tickets, Cell Phone Contracts, and various other things excluding Alcohol consumption/purchase and Tobacco Purchase) either that or a child's parent should be able to decide whether or not their child's age of majority should be before 19...can anyone explain to me why it cannot be this way?

  1. You have not mentioned what is wrong with the current age of majority being at 19 years.  Even though maturity cannot be really measured as age, age does show a correlation with maturity, and to be safe the age of majority was made at 19.  Sure, there are many 16-year-olds who are mature enough to be considered over the age of majority, but there are even more that are not mature enough.  Of course the same thing can be said for 19-year-olds, except the number of those who are not mature enough is probably substantially lower.  There is no point in decreasing the age of majority.
