The age requirement is a state by state issue. In the state that I live in, it is age 5 by Oct. 16th or 17th. I'm not exactly sure. There are many factors that you should consider as well as age. For example, my child will be 5 in time enough to start school next year, but the fact that she is a bit immature for her age, my husband and I agree that waiting a year will be better for her. Kindergarten is much harder today than it was a generation ago. In N.C., by the end of kindergarten, the child will be expected to be able to read, write short paragraphs, and do addition and subtraction My suggestion is, check with the preschool director your child is/will be attending, or with the principle of the school that your child will be attending to find these answers out. It is becoming more and more popular these days to wait till the child is older, so that the child will not be struggling  through school when he/she reaches higher grades. It depends on the state. In some states you must be 5 by September 1st and in others your fifth birthday can be in December. The best thing to do is to call the state in wish you live or are going to live and ask the department of education. you can find the numbers on the net.

It all depends on the state, I am pretty sure that your child should  be 5yrs old by December 31st .. If you are not sure you should contact your local Board of Education. They should better assist you.

It does depend on the state in which you live. I lived in Mass. and it was Sept 1. I now live in New York and it is Dec 1. In Tennessee it is Sept 30th. Those are the ones I know. But, let me say after looking at the cut-off age on the web for various states, I noticed that the studies show that those that wait do significantly better on test scores than those that dont. It is up to the parent to judge readyness for kindergarten. I on one hand put my daughter who is sixteen now in early and she did remarkable. She was an honor student, but with my son who is three and will be four Sept 27 th I have decided to wait. Although, something could still make me decide to send him on time. One regret though with my daughter was she was always younger than the rest. She will graduate at 17 and while the other kids were all getting their driving permits my daughter had to wait. Also, with boys they tend to wait the extra year and I definately think my son needs it. Good luck with your decision.

I started when I was 4, but I believe 5 is a good age.  It depends on when you believe the child is ready.  My birthday is in nov and my parents didn't want me to be the oldest one in my class so when all my other friends turned 6, I turned 5 and I am one of the smartest ones in my class today.  It is truly up to you and when the kids birthday is.

here in our area the age is 5 by July 31st, other districts 5 by Sept 30th. One district in our area has studied the cut-off age. Kids that start Kindergarten after they turn 5 do better in the long run than kids that turn 5 at the end of August or September. Only a small number of young 5's succeed to the top of their class by 4th grade. The majority of late August and Sept b-days wind up in the bottom group of 4th graders. Agin, it depends on your child's individual needs. In my class, most of my Sept birthday kids I would recommend holding back. Sadly, parents send them off to school, and a couple of years later they return to visit only to say how their child is struggling in school.
